binary switch eclipse: opens up a small window on your desktop where you can enter in the urls of websites you want to be blocked from using. you can unblock at any time but will be prompted to enter a code first

rescue time: categorizes sites based on how distracting they are and gathers that data for you so you can see how much time you’re spending and where. also allows you to set goals (i.e. less than two hours distraction time per day)

focus booster: a desktop timer that enables you to set work and break times of whatever duration you like. can be set to appear above any window you open.

i think bse is pc only? rescue time is for chrome and ff, and focus booster can be downloaded for pc or mac. these are all useful on their own but employing a combination of any two or three probably wouldn’t hurt!

there’s another one for mac os x similar to bse called “SelfControl”. it’s free. i use it to get papers done all the time. you enter in a list of domains you want blocked, and set a timer for how long you want to be blocked from those sites. you can’t turn it off until the timer is done, however. i set it every 30 minutes or so when i’m trying to get work done, but it can go up to 24 hours.

Went to the forest by my house again today, I’m so curious what lives down there and what it is doing and if it has a family
